Ausable Chasm is conveniently located just off of I-87 between Exits 34 and 35. We are just 12 miles South of Plattsburgh, NY (the areas largest city - located on famous Lake Champlain) and just one mile North of historic Keeseville on Route 9.
There are several options for those traveling from the North. The quickest and easiest route is to take I-87 South (from Montreal take I-15 South to I-87 South) to Exit 35. Take a left off of the exit on Route 442 East (also called Bear Swamp Road) and follow for a few miles to Route 9. Take a right on Route 9 (South) and follow to Ausable Chasm (approx. 3 miles).
A great option for those who may want a more scenic drive is to follow Route 9 South along Lake Champlain. This Route provides many scenic landscapes and picnic opportunities.
The shortest route from the South would be to take I-87 North to Exit 34. Take a right off of the exit onto Route 9N North and follow through Keeseville for a few miles to Route 9. Head North on Route 9 for about one mile to Ausable Chasm.
For those with a little more time you may want to travel a very scenic route along Lake Champlain. This route, dubbed Lakes to Locks Passage: The Great Northeast Journey, is loaded with scenic views, fabulous history, and numerous picnic areas. No matter where you start along this route you will find quaint little villages where the locals are eager to welcome you. The numerous shops along the way will provide you with unique gifts and the many eateries showcase a wide selection of area foods that will keep you going. Access either the Plattsburgh (to the North) or Essex (to the South) ferries and then follow directions from North or South depending on ferry choice.
Ahhh...traveling through the Adirondacks! While the roads are winding and the routes are much less direct, the views are absolutely spectacular. Traveling amongst towering 4,000 foot mountains and along our many rivers, streams, and lakes makes this route a one-of-a-kind.
For those beyond the Saranac Lake Region take Route 3 East to there and then Route 86 East through Lake Placid and on to Jay, NY. In Jay, take a left onto Route 9N (North) and follow through AuSable Forks and Keeseville to Route 9 North. We are just one mile North of Keeseville on Route 9.
