Walking Tours

Grab a camera and get ready for the most scenic walking tour in the Adirondacks. Wander for several miles on our well-maintained, self-guided walking trails where one splendid view after another awaits. Each of the many scenic vistas provides our guests with a different perspective of the natural beauty of Ausable Chasm while interpretive signage describes the native flora, wildlife and geologic history.

Walking tours include a minimum one-mile walk, and a full tour spans five miles total. Trails include:

  • Inner Sanctum Trail (1 mile)
  • Rim Walk Trail (2 miles)
  • Dry Chasm Trail (1.5 miles)
  • Rainbow Falls/Elephant's Head Vista (1/2 mile)

Add a float tour (raft or tube) through the chasm and make it a Classic Tour, or make it the ultimate Adirondack adventure by adding both a float tour and the Adventure Trail! No reservations required during summer months.

Classic Tour

Adirondack tours at Ausable Chasm offer breathtaking views around every corner, and our Classic Tour is the most popular of all! Follow scenic trails through the oldest natural attraction in the United States and view unique rock formations such as Elephant’s Head, Column Rock Hyde’s Cave and Jacob’s Well. You'll want to have your camera with you as you explore the stunning depths of the chasm on the Inner Sanctum Trail, where incredible views from natural stone walkways are found around every turn. Our many bridges, stairs and vistas make this unique adventure an amazing experience!

Includes Walking, Plus Rafting or Tubing

After a minimum one mile walk, you’ll board a raft and float through the narrowest and deepest region of Ausable Chasm.  Experienced guides navigate the rafts between the towering cliffs of the Grand Flume, past the Broken Needle and around the Whirlpool Basin while discussing the geology and history of the chasm. The rapids found mid-way through the float tour are always a visitor favorite!

Following the float tour, guests have several options. You can explore the Rim Trail for birds-eye views of the chasm, meander through two smaller "dry" chasms on the Dry Chasm Trails, or simply hop aboard one of our trolleys for a quick and easy return to the Welcome Center.

In the Welcome Center, visitors will find a cafe with a wide assortment of lunch items, ice cream and snacks as well as a large gift shop loaded with a variety of gifts, t-shirts and souvenirs.

Avoid the Crowds

The float tours are very popular during the summer. We advise you to come as early in the day as possible to avoid a possible wait for the optional float tour portion of your visit. Reservations are not possible, so you might wait up to an hour between 12pm and 2pm. We think the experience is worth the wait, but if you don't have ample time, please arrive early.

Visitors looking for a more thrilling adventure will want to check out the new Adventure Trail. This unique, family-friendly experience consists of cable bridges, a cargo net climb, edge walks and more. Criss-cross over the Ausable River from one wall of the chasm to the other on the various elements while exploring a region that is not accessible on any other tour or trail. Adding the Adventure Trail to the Classic Tour creates an unforgettable experience you will not find anywhere else!  If already planning on our Adventure Trail, adding the float tour is a steal at just $3 more per person.  Sorry, package discounts will not apply if either the Adventure Trail or float tour is not available.
